The interhalogen compounds can be prepared by the direct combination or by the action of halogen on lower interhalogen compounds. The product formed depends upon some specific conditions, For e.g.,

$\underset{\left(\mathrm{excess}\right)}{{\mathrm{Br}}_2+5{\mathrm{F}}_2\to 2{\mathrm{BrF}}_5}$

${\mathrm{BrF}}_5+3{\mathrm{H}}_2\mathrm{O}\to {\mathrm{HBrO}}_3+5\mathrm{HF}$

${\mathrm{HBrO}}_3$ is bromic acid, hence, the salt is bromate. And interhalogen compound is called halate.
