White phosphorus is a translucent white waxy solid. It is poisonous, insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulphide and glows in dark (chemiluminescence). It dissolves in boiling $\mathrm{NaOH}$ solution in an inert atmosphere giving ${\mathrm{PH}}_3$.
