Passage / Comprehension

The equilibrium pressure of NH4CN(s)  NH3(g) + HCN(g) is 3 atm when only NH4CN(s) is taken initially in the first experiment. In the second experiment, NH4CN(s) is allowed to decompose in presence of NH3 in such a way that new partial pressure of NH3 at new equilibrium is equal to total pressure at original equilibrium.

Find the partial pressure of HCN in the second experiment.

Options:

Answer:
C
Solution:

  1.5 atm      1.5 atm

Kp= 1.5 × 1.5 = 2.25 atm2

Now new  = 3 atm

∴  1.5 × 1.5 = 3 × PHCN

= PHCN = 0.75 atm
