For H2(g) + I2(g) ⇌ 2HI(g), Kc = 7.2 at a certain temperature. A mixture of H2 and I2 in the mole ratio 1:2 is allowed to reach equilibrium. The fraction of H2 converted into HI is

Options:

Answer:
A
Solution:

Take 1 mol H2 and 2 mol I2; x mol of H2 reacts; Δ ng = 0 so moles can be used Kc = ((2x)2)/((1-x)(2-x)) = 7.2

4x2 = 7.2(2 - 3x + x2), so 3.2x2 - 21.6x + 14.4 = 0, i.e. 2x2 - 13.5x + 9 = 0

x = (13.5 - √(182.25 - 72))/4 = (13.5 - 10.5)/4 = 0.75

Fraction of H2 converted is 0.75.

This is option (a).
