Friedel-Craft acylation reaction in benzene takes place. Aluminium chloride is Lewis acid which helps in generating electrophile as shown in first step of reaction.

This electrophile get substituted in benzene and product (A) is obtained. In next step, Clemmensen's reduction occur which converts aldehyde or ketone into hydrocarbon.
