Amino acids have an Amino group$\left({\mathrm{N}\mathrm{H}}_2\right)$, Carboxyl group$\left(\mathrm{C}\mathrm{O}\mathrm{O}\mathrm{H}\right)$and Variable R group. The two functional groups are ionizable i.e. can form ions. Thus two ions can be formed and this is known as Zwitterion formation.
