Which of the following compounds can be prepared in good yield by Gabriel phthalimide synthesis?

Options:

Answer:
A
Solution:

Question Explanation:

Identify which compound can be prepared in good yield using Gabriel phthalimide synthesis.

Concept:

This is based on preparation of primary amines by Gabriel Phthalimide synthesis. Solution:

Gabriel synthesis involves reaction of potassium phthalimide with alkyl halides (R–X) followed by hydrolysis. It gives only primary aliphatic amines via SN2 reaction.

Benzyl halides readily undergo SN2 reaction, giving benzylamine (C6H5–CH2–NH2 ) in good yield.

It does not give aromatic amines (aniline), 2° or 3° amines and  amides.

Final Answer: Option (A)
