Which of the following methods of preparation of amines will give same number of carbon atoms in the chain of amines as in the reactant?

Options:(select one or more)

Answer:
B, C
Solution:

Both (ii) and (iii) conserve the carbon count. (ii) RCONH₂ + LiAlH₄, then H₂O gives RCH₂NH₂ - the carbonyl carbon becomes the CH₂ of the amine, so no carbon is gained or lost. (iii) Gabriel synthesis converts R—X to RNH₂ with the carbon skeleton unchanged. (i) is not a standard amine preparation (nitrite reduction is not used for this), and (iv) Hoffmann bromamide degradation removes one carbon (RCONH₂ → RNH₂). Key changed from NCERT print (iii) to (ii),(iii) per Rahul ruling, 2026-09-30.
