Classification involves hierarchy of steps, in which each step represents a rank or category, called taxonomic category or taxon. All taxa together constitute a taxonomic hierarchy as follows: Species $\to$ Genus $\to$ Family $\to$ Order $\to$ Class $\to$ Phylum or division $\to$ Kingdom.
