Botany - Ecosystem Question with Solution | TestHub
Which of the following can accelerate the rate of decomposition of the detritus?
Options:
Answer:
Solution:
Factors Affecting Decomposition: The rate of decomposition of detritus is controlled by the chemical nature of detritus and a number of climatic factors given below.
a) Chemical nature of detritus. Decomposition of detritus is slow if it contains lignin, chitin, tannins (phenolics) and cellulose. It is rapid if detritus possesses more of nitrogenous compounds (like proteins, nucleic acids) and water-soluble reserve carbohydrates or sugars.
b)Temperature and c) soil moisture is the most important climatic factors that regulate decomposition through their effects on the activities of soil microbes.
d) Aeration: It is required for the activity of decomposers and detritivores. Reduced aeration will slow down the process of decomposition.
e) Salinity: The alkaline soil increase the detritus breakdown.
So, the warm and moist environment favour decomposition whereas low temperature and anaerobiosis inhibit decomposition resulting in buildup of organic materials.
