Endoplasmic reticulum is a network of tubular structures present in the cytoplasm which divide the intracellular space into luminal and extra luminal. These ER can be divided into two types depending upon the presence of ribosome on their outer surface. The rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) has ribosomes on the outer surface while the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) lacks presence of ribosomes. RER is involved in protein synthesis and secretion where as SER is involved in synthesis of lipids and lipid like hormones.
