Cyanobacteria have autotrophic nutrition and can perform photosynthesis with the help of chlorophyll a which is similar in green plants. They may be unicellular, colonial or filamentous forms. Nitrogen fixation in cyanobacteria mainly occurs in specialized cells called heterocysts. Heterocysts are large sized, pale coloured, non motile, mucilage free thick walled cells which are impermeable to oxygen. In polluted water bodies the algal bloom is observed due to eutrophication and the cyanobacteria/blue green algae predominates.
